Mantels by MAi are built to the Uniform Building Code, which specifies that wooden mantels have a top and side clearance of 12" from the standard fireplace opening. Some local codes may have slightly different requirements, so you will need to contact your local fire marshal or building inspector, as well as the instructions for installation of the firebox. Conforming to Code is the homeowner's responsibility.
